The First Look

Those first few seconds when a couple sees each other on that walk down the aisle can be one of the most breathtaking parts of the wedding day. All the planning, preparation and excitement build as the realisation hits that you are moments away from becoming entwined with the one you love.

However, many couples are choosing to break traditions and have their first look before the ceremony so they can isolate and savour the moment.

Couples are adopting this widely American style in the UK as part of a new wave of tradition.

So what is a Wedding's First Look?

In simple terms, it is an intimate moment when a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day before they traditionally do so in the ceremony. The excitement of this experience can be pretty emotional, as the couple can be in the moment without outside pressures from guests or formality.

So, where do you have your First Look at a Wedding?

It is all dependent on the wedding venue. Ideally, you want somewhere a little isolated and romantic, enhancing the atmosphere and allowing for some beautiful photographs. The remote location will also help keep guests away and enable the couple to enjoy the moment alone. With the photographer, of course.

Most wedding venues will have a location regularly utilised for couples' portraits, so contact them for your options, or if your photographer has worked at the venue, they may have some suggestions for you.

If you are still apprehensive about whether a first look is right for you, here are some points you might consider.

  • It's a special moment to share with your partner.  A wedding day can get away from some couples without having spent quality one-on-one time together. A first look can allow one to breathe and take it all in.
  • Wedding photographs, from a first look, can look exceptional. You will forget the photographer is there, and the moment you see each other for the first time will produce unforgettable moments to capture forever.
  • It can settle any nerves you may have. It's understandable to feel nervous, and a first look is a great way to take the pressure out of the anticipation of seeing each other without the pressure of an audience. Some people may feel apprehensive about showing emotion and instead want to do it privately. The first look provides a safe space to do just that.
